A picturesque ride will treat you to vistas of dormant volcanoes, lava beds, steam vents and craters. You will hear legends of Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of the volcano, and visit the many wonders of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Experience a walk out over lava fields and see the power of nature firsthand.
On the drive over to the volcano you're going to stop at a waterfall - Rainbow Falls, it's a big one - and a black sand beach, then you're going to go all over the Volcano. The volcano encompasses a sprawling tract of land, and you'll be going to different ends of it. At one end you'll go into a lava tube, at another end there's a museum, you'll go to another area where you can see the caldera itself, where the lava lake churns.
There is no lava guarantee. In fact, you will most likely not see lava on this tour. The only way you're guaranteed to see molten lava is from a helicopter looking down into the caldera from above (about $240 for that helicopter ride but it leaves from Hilo). The volcano will, at its own discretion, erupt in places. In 2010 it was quite active, at one point shooting lava 80ft up into the air for a mile stretch, but it's hard to predict when and where it will erupt next.
The tours will at least stay around in the evening to view the caldera. The caldera and plume of smoke rising from it glow, much easier to see at night.
